AARoads calls Sunland Gin Road “a major truck stop” and notes that Sunshine Boulevard is the last Eloy exit eastbound. Between them, AARoads’ guide describes Toltec Road as carrying “a number of motorist services.” Add the four CoreCivic facilities, the Eloy Detention Center, Red Rock, Saguaro, and La Palma, which together employ about 1,546 people according to the city’s Wikipedia entry and generate steady transport and supply traffic, plus Skydive Arizona, Robson Ranch, and the cotton and ag yards that built the town, and Eloy is a working freight town, not a pass-through.

What breaks in Eloy

In the lots. The truck that will not crank after a 10-hour break at the Petro or the TA. The NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the nearest long-record station put July’s normal low at 78.7 degrees, so batteries never recover overnight, and a battery cooked since May fails the first hot crank. Three or four batteries plus $150 to $250 labor is the most common Eloy ticket. Air leaks found on the pretrip come second: a hiss at a chamber that the driver knows will not pass the next weigh station. On the road east. From exit 208 the highway enters ADOT’s dust detection corridor, mileposts 209 to 219, built as part of a $115 million widening of I-10 to three lanes each direction between Eloy and Picacho Peak that also rebuilt the SR 87 interchange at exit 211, where the system’s weather radar sits on a 20-foot tower and can see storms 40 miles out. Past exit 219 the road keeps climbing toward Tucson at 2,388 feet. That stretch, in a 105-degree headwind with a load, is where marginal fan clutches, water pumps, and belts finish failing. At the prisons and yards. Transport and supply trucks serving the CoreCivic facilities, and the ag haulers working the fields around Eloy and Toltec, run short hops and idle time that never let the aftertreatment regen on its own. Reefers. Produce moving out of the Pinal County fields and through the Casa Grande distribution docks passes the Eloy lots every day. Getting to you

Casa Grande is the base. The run to exit 200 is six miles from the Florence Boulevard exit, to exit 203 nine, to exit 208 fourteen. The dispatcher quotes the ETA for the exit you name, and the after-hours rate if it applies. The Petro at exit 200 has its own service bays; a mobile tech is for when the bays are full, the truck cannot move, or you would rather be fixed in your parking spot than lose it.
