Summer Heat and Your Truck on I-10: What Fails Between Phoenix and Tucson

Between Phoenix and Tucson in summer, the failures on a loaded truck come in a predictable order: batteries first, then belts and hoses, then the cooling system on the climb past Picacho, then the air dryer, and finally the aftertreatment. A mobile technician can fix every one of them on the shoulder or in a truck stop lot around Casa Grande for a $150 to $350 call-out plus $125 to $185 an hour, and this post goes through them in the order they happen, with what each one costs and what you can check at the Love’s before it costs you.
The numbers behind the heat
The NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Casa Grande National Monument station, the nearest long-record station to the I-10 and I-8 junction, put the July normal high at 105.7 degrees and the normal low at 78.7, with June and August within two degrees. Phoenix Sky Harbor’s July normal high is 106.5 per the National Weather Service. Tucson’s is 100.2 with a 76.3 low. The important number is not the high; it is the low. A truck that parks at the Petro at 8 p.m. in 100-degree air and starts again at 4 a.m. in 80-degree air never cooled off.
The second number is the pavement. Autoblog’s reporting on I-10 heat failures puts asphalt in direct sun 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air, which means a 110-degree afternoon puts the road surface near 160 degrees. Every component on the underside of the truck lives in that.
The third is the road. Casa Grande sits at 1,381 feet. Eloy is 1,549, Picacho 1,614, and Tucson 2,388. Eastbound from the Eloy truck stops the road climbs about 800 feet over 70 miles, through ADOT’s dust detection corridor between mileposts 209 and 219 and past Picacho Peak at exit 219. It is gentle, but it is 70 miles of pulling a load into the afternoon sun, and it is where things that were marginal at the Sacaton rest area finish failing.
1. Batteries: the first thing heat kills
Cold gets the blame for battery failure everywhere else. In Arizona it is heat. High temperatures drive water out of the electrolyte and speed up corrosion and sulfation on the plates, and a battery that has spent June and July at 100-plus degrees has lost capacity it will not get back. The symptom is the no-start after a short stop: the truck cranked at 4 a.m., ran two hours, sat 30 minutes at the Pilot at exit 208, and now clicks.
What a technician does: load-test each battery individually, check the cables and grounds, and check alternator output before anything is replaced, because a bad alternator kills good batteries and replacing the batteries under it is buying them twice. Trucks carry three or four; the load test says how many are actually dead.

What to check at the Love’s: clean, tight terminals; a hold-down that is not loose; and if the truck has been slow to crank for a week, get the batteries load-tested on the next yard visit instead of on the shoulder.
2. Belts, hoses, and everything rubber
Rubber ages by temperature. Belts glaze and crack, tensioners lose spring, hoses go soft at the clamps, and the first hard pull past Picacho throws the belt that has been squealing since Blythe. A thrown fan or water pump belt on the climb is a cooling failure within minutes.
Cost: belt, tensioner, and idler are truck-stock parts and usually a one-hour job on the shoulder.
What to check: glazing on the belt faces, cracks across the ribs, a tensioner that bounces, and any hose that feels soft or bulges at a clamp.
3. The cooling system on the climb
Fan clutches, water pumps, thermostats, and radiators get found out on the stretch from Eloy to Marana. A fan clutch that engages late or slips a little holds temperature on the flat at 5 a.m. and lets it climb at 2 p.m. with a load. A water pump that has been weeping for a month lets go. A radiator and charge air cooler packed with the fine dust this corridor is famous for, the reason ADOT built a 13-sensor dust detection system with variable speed signs here, cannot shed the heat it could in April.
Cost: fan clutch or water pump $800 to $2,000; hoses, thermostats, and coolant while it is apart. On the road, the technician also checks the shroud, the fan blades, and the coolant condition, because a repeat overheat is usually a second cause that was missed.
What to check: coolant level cold, any pink or green crust at the water pump weep hole, the fan clutch engaging on a cold start, and the radiator face for packed dust.
4. The air dryer and compressor
Compressors pump hotter air in summer and the dryer sits over 150-degree pavement, so the desiccant cartridge saturates faster and the purge carries less water out. By August the tanks hold water, the dryer pops constantly, and a valve somewhere starts to stick. CVSA treats an audible leak at a brake chamber as a defective brake, and two defective brakes on a five-axle combination is out of service.
Cost: cartridge, purge valve, governor, and heater are serviced on site inside the first hour plus parts; leak repairs $200 to $600 plus parts; chambers and slack adjusters $250 to $600 per wheel end. The air system page explains the criteria.
What to check: drain the tanks and see what comes out. Water means the cartridge is done.
5. Tires
Tires are the failure everyone expects and the one a mobile mechanic usually does not do; roadside tire service is its own vendor with its own truck, and the roadside page explains how that hand-off works. What matters here is that hot pavement raises tire pressure and finds every weak casing, and a blowout on I-10 near Picacho tends to take a mud flap, an air line, and a marker light with it. Those three are a mobile mechanic’s job, $150 to $500 for the lights and wiring and $200 to $600 plus parts for the air line.
What to check: pressures cold, before the day heats up, and any tire that is running hotter than its neighbor by hand at the fuel island.
6. The aftertreatment
Heat changes how the engine manages exhaust temperature, and the stop-and-go around the Walmart distribution center and the Lucid docks in Casa Grande, the CoreCivic gates in Eloy, and the Inland Port construction in Coolidge never lets the DPF regen on its own. The lamp comes on at the SR 87 interchange and the derate stages start on the climb. DEF is heat-sensitive too; fluid that sat in a hot tank or came from a slow pump is the usual story behind a DEF quality fault.

What to check: soot load on the dash if the truck shows it, DEF level and where it was bought, and whether the truck has completed a regen recently.
7. The driver on the shoulder
Everything above assumes the driver is fine. On a 110-degree afternoon on a shoulder with no shade, that is not automatic. Water in the cab, out of the sun on the safe side of the truck, and an honest conversation with the dispatcher about whether the repair is short enough to wait through or whether a move to the next exit makes sense. When the dust detection signs between mileposts 209 and 219 light up, visibility can drop to nothing in seconds, and the plan changes.
The summer pre-trip, short version
- Batteries load-tested and terminals clean.
- Belts, tensioner, hoses, and clamps inspected by hand.
- Coolant level cold, fan clutch engaging on cold start, radiator face clear of dust.
- Air tanks drained; water means a cartridge.
- Tire pressures cold.
- Soot load and DEF checked; a regen completed before a day of dock work.
