Reporting on the change says Cummins has offered revised calibrations for more than 1.5 million engines that raise the final speed from 5 to 25 mph, and Mack and Volvo said updates introduced in May 2026 extend the repair window from 4 hours to as much as 160 hours, with post-2010 trucks targeted by the end of 2027; the EPA published a further proposed rule on July 14, 2026. What that means on the shoulder near Eloy: your truck may or may not have the update, and the only way to know is to read it. Plan for the old schedule until the laptop says otherwise.

What a forced regen fixes, and what it does not

A DPF regen burns accumulated soot out of the filter. The truck does it on its own at highway temperature; it cannot do it in the stop-and-go around the Walmart distribution center and the Lucid docks, or on the short hops between the Eloy truck stops, and that is where soot loads climb and the lamp comes on. A forced regen from the laptop, with the truck parked and the exhaust clear, restores the filter to a usable soot load and clears a soot-load derate. On this corridor it is a legitimate roadside fix, and it is priced as one.

What a regen does not fix:

  • A DEF quality or SCR efficiency fault. The filter is not the problem. A regen does nothing for a NOx sensor that is reading wrong, a doser that is clogged, or a tank of DEF that was cut with water. The fault returns and the inducement timer never stopped.
  • A face-plugged or ash-loaded filter. A filter that has reached the end of its ash life will not regen back to health. That is a filter clean or replacement, and you hear that honestly.
  • A cause upstream. A leaking injector, a turbo problem, or an EGR fault that is making soot faster than the filter can burn it will plug the filter again within days.
  • A cleared code with the fault still present. The ECM logs it again within minutes. Clearing codes to make the next 60 miles is not a repair, and the technician will not sell it as one.
