Truck will not start or will not crank: what is wrong and what the roadside fix costs near Casa Grande

A semi truck that will not start near Casa Grande is fixed on site more often than not: one of our mobile techs can come out to the I-10 and I-8 shoulders, the Eloy truck stops, and the yards around town, for a $150 to $350 call-out ($250 to $500 after hours) plus $125 to $185 an hour. The most common cause on this corridor is heat-killed batteries, which is a $150 to $250 labor job plus $150 to $250 per battery. A starter or alternator runs $600 to $1,500 installed. Our tech quotes the number before the service truck leaves.

The first thing to sort out on the call is which no-start you have. They are different jobs with different parts on the service truck.

Check this first (from the driver’s seat, no tools)

  1. Key on, watch the dash. Dim or flickering lights, a slow gauge sweep, or a dash that resets when you hit the key means low battery voltage. Bright lights and a dead crank point at the starter, its cable, or the neutral safety.
  2. Listen. One click and nothing is a low bank or a starter solenoid. Rapid clicking is a bank too low to hold the solenoid in. A grind or a whir with no engine movement is the starter drive or the flexplate. Silence with bright lights is often the ignition switch, the neutral safety, or a battery disconnect.
  3. Transmission and switches. Confirm neutral, the parking brake set, and the battery disconnect on, if the truck has one. It sounds basic, and it is the first thing our tech asks.
  4. If it cranks but will not fire. Note the fuel gauge, whether you changed a fuel filter recently, and whether the truck stalled on the road or would not restart after a stop. Cranking for more than 30 seconds at a time cooks the starter, so stop.
  5. Voltage, if you have a meter. A bank reading under about 12.2 volts at rest is discharged. Under 11 is a bank that will not crank a diesel.

Do not lie under a truck on the shoulder to wiggle cables. Say what you saw and let the tech do that with beacons out.

What is usually wrong

What you seeLikely causeFix and cost
Dim dash, one click or rapid clicksBatteries discharged or heat-damagedJump or load test $150 to $250 labor; batteries $150 to $250 each, trucks take three or four
Started at dawn, dead after a 30-minute stopBatteries cooked over the summer, or a charging faultLoad test first; alternator $600 to $1,500 installed if it is not charging
Bright lights, one solid click, no crankStarter, solenoid, or a corroded main cableStarter $600 to $1,500 installed; a cable end is labor and a lug
Bright lights, no click, no crankIgnition switch, neutral safety, relay, or a disconnect switchLabor at $125 to $185 an hour, usually inside the first hour
Cranks well, will not fire, recent filter change or ran lowAir in the fuel systemPrime and bleed on site, labor
Cranks well, will not fire, no smokeFuel supply, a plugged filter, a crank or cam sensor, or a fuel pumpLaptop diagnosis $250 to $500 with any regen; filters and sensors from truck stock
Cranks slow and hot after a highway stopHeat-soaked starter or tight engineCool-down and load test, then starter if it repeats

Every range is the one on the pricing page. Our tech tests before replacing: a starter is not sold to a truck with a dead bank, and a bank is not sold to a truck with a dead alternator that will just cook the new batteries.

Why trucks will not start on this corridor

Heat. The NOAA 1991-2020 normals for the Casa Grande National Monument station put July at a 105.7-degree normal high and a 78.7-degree normal low. A battery bank never gets a cool night to recover, electrolyte cooks off, and the truck that cranked fine at 5 a.m. at the TA in Eloy will not turn over after a 30-minute stop at noon at the Sunshine Boulevard Pilot. Starters heat-soak the same way: a starter that works cold and fails after a hard highway run past Picacho is a known pattern, and it usually fails for good within a few weeks.

The docks matter too. Trucks working the Walmart distribution center, Lucid’s plant at Thornton and Peters, and the yards along Jimmie Kerr Boulevard sit with the key on, the reefer and the cab running, and the engine off, which draws a bank down that the short hop to the next dock never charges back. See the dead batteries page for the battery side of this in more detail.

When it is a tow instead of a mobile fix

A no-start is a tow when the engine is mechanically stuck (a hydrolocked or seized engine will not turn by hand and will not be fixed on a shoulder), when the fuel pump or an injector has failed inside the engine, or when the diagnosis finds a fault that needs the dealer’s tooling. A Class 8 tow to Phoenix or Tucson runs $600 to $1,500. If the symptom on the phone already says shop, you hear it on the phone rather than after a call-out fee. The roadside breakdown page covers how that decision gets made.

Where the tech meets you

Give an exit or a mile marker. The Eloy truck stops at exits 200, 203, and 208 are the fastest runs from Casa Grande, and a truck that will not start in a lot is safer than one on a shoulder, so if the truck died at a fuel island, have the fuel desk let you sit until the service truck is alongside. I-8 west of exit 161 and I-10 past Picacho are quoted by the mile.

What to say on the call

Where you are, the year and engine, whether it clicks, cranks, or does nothing, what the dash lights look like, and whether it started fine earlier today. Add whether you are loaded and how many hours you have left. With that, our tech quotes the call-out and the labor rate, tells you which parts the tech will bring, and gives you an ETA. The semi truck repair page covers starting and charging repairs in full, and the roadside call-out estimator shows what the call is likely to cost before you dial.

Frequently Asked Questions

My truck clicks once and will not crank at the Petro in Eloy. Is that the starter or the batteries?

Usually the batteries, especially after a hot afternoon. One click with dim dash lights is low voltage; a solid click with bright lights points at the starter or its cable. Our tech load tests the bank before selling anything, because a starter replaced on a guess is $600 to $1,500 you did not need to spend.

How much does a no-start call cost around Casa Grande?

The call-out is $150 to $350 in Casa Grande and Eloy, $250 to $500 after hours, plus labor at $125 to $185 an hour with a one-hour minimum. A jump or battery job is $150 to $250 labor plus $150 to $250 per battery, and a starter or alternator installed is $600 to $1,500. You hear the number on the phone before anyone drives out.

It cranks fine but will not fire. Can that be fixed on the shoulder?

Most of the time. Air in the fuel lines after a filter change or running the tank low, a plugged fuel filter, or a failed sensor are all handled on site with the laptop and truck stock. What cannot be fixed roadside is a fuel pump or injector failure that needs the shop, and our tech tells you that before the second hour starts.

Should I just get a jump from another driver?

A jump can get you rolling, and drivers do it in the lots every day. The catch is that a battery cooked by a Casa Grande summer will die again at the next stop, and a jump does nothing for a starter or a cable. If the truck died once already this week, have the bank load tested while the service truck is there.
